Hiring a Dehumidifier for Flooded House

A useful guide for thos affected by flooding.

When Should I Hire a Dehumidifier?

If you have had a flood, a burst pipe, a leaking roof or building work done it is important to dry the building properly in order to reduce and prevent damp from lingering.

Hiring a dehumidifier to remove dampness thoroughly prevents mould that can ruin furnishings and damage structures as well as posing a risk to your health.

What is a dehumidifier?

A dehumidifier is an electrically powered machine that draws moisture from the air within a building, collecting it in a tank or receptacle, which enables you to then pour it away.

It’s a machine that will reduce the amount of water in the air, walls, furnishings and floors.

All of our machines work on a refrigerant principle which draw in and then cool and condense the air.

Benefits of Hiring a Dehumidifier

You are able to remove dampness from the environment efficiently, thus removing the likelihood of mould, mildew and the fungal spores associated with moisture thus making homes healthier and more comfortable.

My property is flooded

If there is a substantial depth of water in your property you will need to hire a water pump to remove it first.

Then we suggest hiring a carpet cleaner to suck as much water as possible from carpets.

A dehumidifier should be used in a closed environment, so keep doors and windows shut, this enables the dehumidifier to draw moisture from the building, rather than from the atmosphere outside. The use of a fan and heating greatly increases the efficiency and speed at which a dehumidifier removes moisture from the atmosphere. We have special rates for fans that are hired with our dehumidifiers, please see here for further details.

You will also need to provide a source of warmth to speed up the process and our dehumidifiers will not operate at less than 4 degrees centigrade.

Some of our units have built in heater elements to raise the room temperature, please ask for this type if you do not have any alternative means of heating.

The machines need to have a domestic electrical power supply close by to plug into.

How long will the drying process take?

This depends on the size of the property and the amount of dampness you need to remove.

For larger, very damp areas or to speed up the process we recommend hiring more than one dehumidifier, or a large industrial dehumidifier and placing them in different positions.

Dehumidifiers work best when positioned in the middle of a room, as there is more air movement.

You may wish to hire a fan to increase air movement within the closed property.
